Day 1 - 10/09/18

We were given three words (a material, process and -ism) to create a proposal for a piece of work. Using the words air, expand, and futurism, I brainstormed related terms and imagery, such as blow, tattoos and technology. I then expanded this idea further into the concept of a small metallic machine which roamed roads of a utopian city and repaired potholes and markings.

Day 2 - 11/09/18

From the timed drawing exercises, I experimented with different media and approaches to convey varying scale, materiality and mood. Visualisation can be affected by the choice of media, particularly to make its texture known to the viewer. When expressing feelings which the material gave me, I found that colour, media, composition and density played an important role. For example, using a light grey marker allowed me show the transparency of the plastic, and a harsher material such as graphite was better for the reflective pin heads. One of the student work that stood out to me most was the illustration of a giant hair dryer which blew all the hair off one's head. The student explained the purpose of it (e.g. military) and rendered the illustration with a lot of detail. The concept was simple to understand therefore successful.

Day 3 - 14/09/18

The pitch allowed me to explore abstract ideas of design. By setting certain restrictions, such as three words and the size of the ‘final’ visualisation, I was able to diverge into different ideas, in an otherwise free rein project. My peers commented things on my work such as 'good visualization-gave the impression of the material, mood worked with theme, solid contextualization and material.' They also suggested to 'maybe put the ROAD SF onto a location for scale' and for improvements, I could label the diagram and show its scale. I found this feedback valuable in looking back at my own works. The process of critiques were helpful and fulfilled my expectations, as well as expanded my own learning.
