Day 1 - 29/10/18

At the start, I did not understand the brief completely, as there was not a specific task. I also was not exactly sure what a manifesto was, and how they were linked to the research task examples shown in the brief. During the blinded discussion, I was interested to hear everyone's different interpretation of the 'white space' title. This helped me gather my ideas and evaluate my own research task. However, after taking photos of campus while experimenting with material and making a 3D figure of one of the images to find it a new context, I struggle. It was difficult to come up with ideas as I could not really envision them to be turned into final products of white space. Only at the end of the class did I process the activities and processes that were set out to be steps towards a final project, and the photos themselves did not have to make it to the project. From other manifestos that I looked at from my research, and the experimentation that I did with the photos and materials, I was able to come up with some manifesto rules. I found it difficult to put restrictions on my work, although I know without them, the possibilities would be endless and that I would never have something that I was truly happy with.

Day 2 - 30/10/18

I had more ideas on how to move forward with my manifesto and experimentation from yesterday.  Looking at my peers manifestos, I was able to see the variety in people's interpretation of a similar task. For example, my manifesto was made up of physical restrictions on artworks, whereas some peoples' manifestos were more about mentally preparing themselves to make art. One manifesto that stood out to me in particular was one simple one about chewing gum, which involved a step by step process, and a slightly humorous object. Another one which had smart use of location that I found memorable was about being hidden, had small text and was conveniently displayed in a corner of the room, away from plain sight.

Day 3 - 31/10/18

I went to perform and film my piece today at Lucas Gardens, Camberwell. The weather was perfect for my manifesto's requirement to film in daylight, as it was sunny. When I first tested a small patch on grass to see how the salt would look on the grass, it sunk like I had expected so the salt wasn't obvious to see from afar. I noticed there were many leaves on the grass and had the idea to lay out the square with leaves first, so they could act as a base for the salt. In hindsight, I should have anticipated this issue beforehand and done experiments with the materiality before pursuing the final. As I wanted the film to be composed of short clips of the process, before finally revealing the end product, I was originally going to mute all the audio. Because the leaves were part of the piece now, I decided to take a sound recording of me stepping on the crunchy leaves to act as background sound in the final edit. I was slightly apprehensive about the environmental impact which my piece would leave, as salt does not naturally belong on the grass, and I was unable to clean up due to the size of salt. However, as winter is coming it was less likely to be an issue as grass would not be growing.
